I have curly hair…and I straighten it as often as I can. Even though it is beautiful curly and I always get a compliment, I like the control of having it straight. Curly hair is sensitive and moody. I have a hard time not washing second day when I wear my hair curly and I feel like it looks frizzy. That is the nature of curly hair because each hair strand is bending which means the cuticle layer is spread out…making hair look frizzy. I have done a ton of research and experimenting with my curly hair and these are the tips I can give.
- The shampoo and conditioner are EXTREMELY important. You can tell the difference between a curly hair product and a normal one immediately. I have used Deva Curl for years but I am currently experimenting with Kavella, as their ingredient list meet my standards. Deva Curl is not quite up to my standards for safe ingredients…but it is much better than most.
- Comb your hair with a wide tooth comb in the shower. Do not comb or brush it again.
- Use a Micro Fiber towel to dry your hair. Deva Curl has a great one. I gently ring out any moisture and comb through with my fingers to get the right part. I will scrunch with my fingers again to get the moisture out and then use the towel to continue to scrunch and hold gently in sections. The towel drys it really fast.
- Product is essential. I love the It’s a 10 Leave In…but it is not as safe as I would like. I also have used many different curl creams and I have found they all work pretty much the same. Again I am experimenting with Kavella.
- Don’t touch it. Keep your hands off or it will be frizzy. I might scrunch it one more time when it is almost dry. If you want you can touch up with a curling iron or twirl some pieces with your fingers.
I have found a system that works with my curly hair but it took a while. Keep trying and you and your curly hair will have a beautiful relationship.
Cheers!
